Happy Fourth of July to all my relations! It is important to remember that on the orginal fourth freedom was only a dream for people of color and women. We had to wait for our citizenship in 1924. In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed but there had to another one specifically for Native Americans in 1968 due to some of the jurisdictional issues on the reservation. And then in 1978 the Indian Religous Freedom Act was passed which restored our right to practice our sacred ways. Tim Giago has often written that if the government would just honor all our treaties we would gain true freedom. I am grateful for all the sacrifices our elders and ancestors have made on our behalf.
